A backless dress removes the band and straps that usually hold lingerie in place. The solution depends on the cut of the back, the support you want and how long you will wear it. Test the piece with the dress before the event, not on the night.

Start with the back opening

A low back to the waist needs a different solution from a full open back. Look at the deepest point of the opening and the fabric around it. If the dress has a deep V or a scoop, a low-back converter may sit below the fabric line; a full open back usually needs adhesive cups or a backless bodysuit.

The four practical options

OptionSupportBest for
Adhesive cupsLightFull open back, short wear
Low-back converterMediumLow back that still has side coverage
Backless bodysuitMediumTorso coverage and a clean line
Seamless thongNoneUnder the dress, no visible line

Adhesive cups

Adhesive cups attach to the skin and leave the back completely open. They suit a short evening and a light bust; they are not a replacement for a wired bra all day. Test them on clean, dry skin, press them on, and wear them for twenty minutes before the event. Remove slowly and follow the care instructions.

Low-back converters

A converter joins the bra cups at the front and pulls the band low across the back. It keeps the support of a bra while clearing the upper back. Check that the converter does not show below the dress and that the band stays level when you sit. A loose band will slide down; start with a band that fits.

Backless bodysuits

A backless bodysuit gives torso coverage and a clean line under a fitted dress. Check the shoulder-to-crotch length first: if it pulls at the shoulder or the base rides up, size up. The leg opening should sit flat, not cut in. Browse bodysuits and the backless dress answer.

Test with the dress

Put the dress on over the lingerie, sit, walk and raise your arms. Check the back, the neckline and the hem in daylight. If the lingerie shows, change the option rather than pulling the dress all evening. Keep a spare pair of adhesive cups or a seamless thong in your bag.

Sizing and skin

If you are between sizes on a bodysuit, take the larger. Adhesive cups follow the cup size on the pack; do not size up to get more coverage. If you have sensitive skin, test the adhesive on a small area first and avoid leaving it on for long wear.

For the full range, start with bras and sets or bodysuits. Plain packaging, tracked delivery in 7–12 working days and 14-day returns apply.
