A garter belt holds stockings up and changes the line of the leg. The fit is decided by the waistband, the strap length and the clips, not by the number of straps alone. A belt that slides or twists will pull the stockings down all evening.

Waist or high hip

Most garter belts sit at the natural waist or the high hip. The waistband should lie flat and stay level when you sit. If it rolls, it is too loose or too narrow for your shape. A wider band distributes the pull better than a thin elastic strip.

Strap length and clips

Adjust the straps before you attach the stockings. The front straps should run down the front of the thigh without twisting; the back straps should sit behind the leg. If the straps are too short, the clips will pull the stocking top down. If they are too long, the stockings will sag.

Stockings or thigh-highs

Stockings give the cleanest line under a fitted dress because there is no waistband under the fabric. Thigh-highs are easier to put on and take off. Choose by the outfit and the time you have, not by habit.

How to attach stockings

Sit down and roll the stocking up to the thigh. Clip the front straps first, then the back, checking that the seam is straight. Stand and adjust the straps so the stocking top sits flat. Do not clip through the reinforced band if the stocking has one; use the marked area.

Denier and fit

Denier is the weight of the yarn. A low denier is sheer and delicate; a higher denier is more opaque and more forgiving. Stockings are sized by height and weight, and sometimes by thigh circumference. If you are between sizes, take the larger; a stocking that pulls at the toe will ladder.

Comfort and spare pair

Wear the belt for twenty minutes before the event to check the clips and the waistband. Carry a spare pair of stockings; a ladder at the ankle ends the look faster than a missing earring. For roleplay, a garter belt also gives the costume a finished line. Browse stockings, fishnet and thigh-highs.
